A Labor Assistant is an individual who provides one-on-one support for a woman in labor. A Labor Assistant may also be termed a doula, monitrice, birth support provider, or midwifery apprentice. Labor Assistants provide uninterrupted care for the laboring woman and her partner, helping them participate fully in their experience by offering physical and emotional support and information about the birth process. A labor assistant is also a bridge between primary care providers and the woman by presenting all avenues of technology and alternatives. A labor assistant typically provides continuity of care prenatally through the postpartum period.
